Marlene Peterson was first introduced to music as a young girl in Minnesota when she asked for a music box but instead received a box of music - an assortment of toy musical instruments. The gift piqued her interest in music and eventually led to band in high school. She was immediately drawn to the drums but her parents disapproved, fearing Marlene would run off to join a real band. She settled for the clarinet, but her continued interest and obvious aptitude for drums, plus the blessings of her band instructor, caused her parents to relent.
Marlene bought a drum set and played on her own and occasionally with other musicians. She earned seven dollars for a one night stand as a replacement drummer with a band playing at a fraternity party. Her interest wained near the end of high school, so she sold her drums and took a job as an assembly worker.
Just when Marlene had given up on music, she was contacted by the manager of a local band that would soon become Vixen. She met the other members, auditioned and was accepted. The worst fears of the elder Petersons had come true - their daughter had become a rock musician.
The band split over artistic differences and Marlene went on to play for more than a decade in several bands. Her career took her across the country and even to Europe. Most of the bands she played with had all or primarily female members. She enjoyed the company of other female musicians and it was generally easier for female bands to find engagements.
Eventually, worn out by the demands of the road, Marlene decided to hang up her sticks and work with computers. Although she now enjoys a more settled life, she has many fond memories of her days on the road and is grateful to have had the oppurtunity to live the life others only dream about while she was still young enough to recover from it.
At present, there are no plans for Marlene to make a comeback, but there is always hope.
Why Monkey Feet?
While touring with Vixen, Marlene earned the nickname Monkey Feet for her ability to retrieve a toppling cymbal stand with her bare foot. Her toes are still quite dexterous.
